Are religious symbols based on naturally occurring patterns?

Is the reason that religious people see religious symbology in the world because those symbols were based on naturally occurring patterns in the first place?

    almost any design can be matched to something naturally occurring

    though I did note a few years ago that the Menorah appears to be fashioned after a common form olive branches take

    I have been meaning to research whether that has a basis in fact

    in Islam, no such thing as "religious symbols" the crescent is a product of Turkey [during Ottoman era]
