Not so very long ago a great many people, including me, thought they would never see a black president of the United States.  Then we saw one elected twice showing that  race is not a barrier to being nominated to run for the top job.

It could have already happened back in the 1920/30's, if Herbert Hoover had died in office, his VP Charles Curtis was a member of the Kaw Nation.  

I suppose it comes down to numbers, American Indian and Alaska Native Americans make up around 4% of the population, while African Americans make up 35%, so far fewer of them enter politics.
