Did not have auto insurance for 8 months in Virginia?

So i read somewhere that VA is one of few states where auto insurance is not mandatory, but you do have to pay the DMV a fee of $500 at the time of registration. I had Geico but i was dropped after covid last year due to some financial difficulties. i hadn't had insurance until now, about 8 months later. what will happen at the DMV? will i still have to pay $500 at the time of registration?

I didn't READ anywhere that you don't need auto insurance in VA, but I did LEARN that you do.  You must be VERY gullible.

If you had a registered uninsured car for 8 months - you may be in a world of asshurt. You could lose your license, registration, tags. Paying the $500 does not cover you for an accident just allows you to drive (why we have that law I have NO idea - keeps MY un/under-insured insurance rates high).
