"Forget" or "Forgot"?

I still do not understand. So many people will be like "Oh, I forget". And it does not make sense to me. Like yeah, they forgot earlier, but then why does "forgot" even exist if no one can forget at the moment because then they wouldn't have forgotten?

Update:

Gypsyfish, so then when is there ever a time to use "forgot"? In the 2nd example you made, why do you use forget instead of forgot?

Update 2:

Anonymous, when would you use forgot then

    Tenses, darling.

    Forget: present tense

A: "Do you remember what you ate for dinner last night?"

B: "Oh, I forget; let me think for a moment."

A: "What is this mark on your calendar for?"

B: "My memory is so terrible, I always forget. It'll come to me in a moment."

I often forget my phone when I leave the house.

I forget why I marked my calendar for the 20th.

Does he forget his wife's birthday every year?

There are plenty of uses for the present tense "forget".
