May have deleted Windows generic USB PC camera driver?

I just bought a new Vimicro webcam and so before I installed the new driver I uninstalled the previous one. Installation was successul, but no messenging software or even its own video capture programme "see" the camera is there. The lights on the camera work, which make me believe the hardware is not faulty. I suspect I uninstalled the Windows component that would allow any camera to work in the first place. Microsoft.com gives me no clue.

So has something similar happened to you? Would you know where I could get or could you share a generic USB camera driver? Or have you experienced something similar with a Vimicro camera?

Update:

System restore did not work.

I have the CD and had installed the driver. So I tried uninstalling as suggested below, I get a pop-up message sayng there is an unknown device but does not ask to install. So then tried through device manager, up to disk installation but it does not find the driver file (?!?!).

None of the download links in Vimicro's website work, I wonder if the company is out of business.

*Bummer*

Try this. Remove the camera. Remove all software that came with camera. Restart PC. Insert USB cam again. Wait for prompts to install software. Install it. Check both computer and camear are USB 1.0 / 1.0 or 2.0 / 2.0. If not they won`t work together anyhow.

Do a system restore, before this happened, then just install drivers, then connect usb camera, windows should show you found new hardware, and install the camera from there.
