I am reviewing an article about beef production in which the author used that exponentiation or scientific notation to express "kilos per hectare per year" in the text, not in an arithmetical calculation. Would that be clear and appropriate? Examples of scientific notation I have found seem to only refer to numbers or equations. So I would appreciate it if you could cite references. xx

Estou com um texto que diz: "Trabalhei 3 meses 'a frio' antes de assinarem minha carteira de trabalho". O que quer dizer, algo como "a sangue frio", "suando frio"? Ou será que está soletrado errado e deveria ser "a fio"?

Só responda se realmente já usou ou conhece a expressão; sem conjeturas porque o problema não é interpretação de texto.

Uma amiga recém-formada em jornalismo conseguiu seu primeiro emprego em uma assessoria de imprensa e faz principalmente "clippings" de notícias. A maior parte é em formato eletrônico, mas ocasionalmente pedem para que ela guarde recortes de jornal e revistas - eles parecem ainda estar implementando um sistema de organização e arquivamento pelo que ela me falou.

Queria dar de presente justamente uma pasta personalizada para ela arquivar isso, mas não tenho idéia de qual seria o melhor tipo.

Assessores de imprensa, jornalistas, pessoas que entendem de artigos de papelaria, alguém poderia dar uma sugestão? Pontos extra se derem um link para imagens!

I work in a small company and was thinking of giving some Christmas gifts (like mince pies or something else that could be bought in a nice package and shared with families) to co-workers who work close to me but are lower in rank. A couple of them celebrate Christmas too but the other two are Muslims. How (in)appropriate would it be to get them something?

At the workplace there are other three people who are higher in the hierarchy as well as the owner, all of whom are not Christian either. I don't think I should get them something, would you agree?

PS: I am new at the office, so I am not particularly close to any of them, but it is a friendly office environment.

I am familiar with software that converts photos into cross-stitch designs and was wondering if there would be something like that for patchwork or quilting. The pictures I would like to convert are abstract/graphic works of art, which should not require as much editing as photographs, I think.

I used a replutable's scholar argument in a section of my thesis, based on a guest lecture for the launching of her new book. I thought it was from the book and had quoted it as such, but the interlibrary loan has arrived and I could not find it -so it seems it was just something she said for the sake of the presentation. Do you think I could rectify the citation and still use it? Or is using something that is not on paper too risky?

Please answer if you have academic writing experience, not out of sheer guessing.

By informational interview I mean setting up a meeting with an experienced professional to pick his/her brain about a career. It would be more about obtaining information; not a job pitch but still professional. Ideally I would visit their office but I wonder if a different setting would be more neutral/friendly. It should not take long either, I reckon about 30min.

So, any ideas?

I just bought a new Vimicro webcam and so before I installed the new driver I uninstalled the previous one. Installation was successul, but no messenging software or even its own video capture programme "see" the camera is there. The lights on the camera work, which make me believe the hardware is not faulty. I suspect I uninstalled the Windows component that would allow any camera to work in the first place. Microsoft.com gives me no clue.

So has something similar happened to you? Would you know where I could get or could you share a generic USB camera driver? Or have you experienced something similar with a Vimicro camera?

Have you ever heard of a PhD student who did not write much/anything for a long time and still managed to obtain a degree within a UK 3-year full time PhD programme? For how long? What were the circumstances?

(Of course that is unadvisable and untenable, but at this point I could use some real-life examples)

I am wearing an ankle-length strappy black velvet dress tomorrow and was wondering if it would go well with semi-opaque khaki tights. Or should I wear regular 15-denier sheer tights (they also contrast with my skin, sort of pale mediterranean olive)?

My shoes, cardi and purse are also black (satin and velvet); and I won't have time to shop for other colour tights tomorrow (it's difficult to find them my size).

Hope someone online can answer this...I have just realised my chequebook is finished but have to make an early payment. In my home country, I could go to a cashpoint and print a few sheets until the new chequebook arrives, but have never done that in Britain. Can this be done here? Do HSBC ATMs offer this service?

I don't want to venture out so early in the morning for nothing...

Something a hippie would say? American English? Does it have a 70s ring? Does today's youth use it? I would welcome your impressions and if you have any idea when it started being used like that.
