It's a mixed bag.

There is a lot of good stuff on Netflix, but their interface/algorithm is garbage, and it tries to get you to watch the same crap.

There are websites that keep up to date with all of the stuff that is available so you can search for what you want to watch rather than scrolling through page after page of the same crap in different order.

Because there are other media companies that own the right to that content in NZ and Netflix for whatever reason hasn't gone through the process of securing it for NZ.  This could be perhaps because NZ is a smaller market for Netflix and it doesn't have enough subscribers to justify an expensive bidding war for the NZ media rights.  Netflix knows people use VPN's and are OK having people get around these issues by using that.  

Because people are happy to continue paying for it
