are LED computer monitors safe?

"LED" monitors/screens are still LCD panel ones, but they use LED backlights rather than miniature fluorescent tubes as backlights, as with the previous generation LCDs.

And near enough all newer domestic lighting uses similar white LEDs to those LED screen backlights.

There are panicmongers who say will any imaginable type of technology is "dangerous", without any good grounds, and usually with zero technical knowledge of what they are criticizing.

Anything truly dangerous is not permitted in consumer appliances.

Quite.  Believe me, if cathode ray tubes were safe, and LED monitor is safer.

technically, ALL light is harmful to humans. it is a type of radiation, at its core. if you just take a look at this chart, you will see all the different types of electromagnetic radiation there are, including all of the various colors in the visible light spectrum, as well as the invisible, such as infrared, ultraviolet, and even radio and microwave wavelengths:

bottom line is, you SHOULDN'T be staring at ANY computer screen nonstop, without taking a break. LED or not makes no difference.

LED is just lower power and brighter light. you can always lower the brightness...

LED's do not emit a lot of UV light, however most computers can be setup with a "blue light" filter to cut down on it farther. You can also buy filtered glasses, prescription or non-prescription with UV light block coatings. I have the coatings on my glasses for just such a reason.
