Can't select correct resolution after win10 update?

I use a nividia gpu. normally my resolution is 1920 x 1080  on my main monitor but now my recommended size is 1280 x 1024 and can't select any higher. 2nd monitor is completely fine its just the first one.

Tried

-uninstalling device in manager

-downloading newest drivers

-updating driver

-rolling back to previous windows update

-setting a custom resolution in the nividia control panel

I got nothing. Any help would be great

Update:

I did reboot after installing. I have a RTX 2070 and this is the driver I downloaded https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx... I might try doing it from safe mode

Update 2:

Also glad I have to resort to updating my question instead of just being able to replay to users. nani the **** yahoo.

Update 3:

Mike I was talking about the device in display adapters. It would show my gpu and I tried updating and uninstalling it. The monitor i'm having issues with uses hdmi to vga

go to nvidia.com, and download & install the latest drivers for your model.

windows' drivers are notoriously bad, and known for breaking hardware usability.

Ok so i'm back to normal. I ended up taking out the hdmi to vga cable so I could see the model number and write it down. But when I put it back in it just went back to normal. So I guess it wasn't in all the way or something I have no clue but it works so i'm not complaining lol. Thanks for the help everyone

You mention drivers and devices in device manager, but WHICH drivers are you talking about?  You generally install chipset drivers, then video and audio drivers.  And then you MIGHT have to install monitor drivers also.  Most monitors are plug and play in the sense that if you install the correct driver for your GPU, then the monitor will be properly installed.  But for some odd monitors, you need a driver for the monitor to introduce it to the driver for the video card, before the two will play nice together.

EDIT: Have you verified you have the GeForce RTX2070 - Again, I know this is an odd thing to ask, but many times I've seen people who buy a card, thinking they have card A, when in fact they have Card B.  check the Hardware ID just to be sure.  It is odd that the driver wont' install, but the generic will.

Strange question, but one which must be asked. ... did you reboot after installing the new drivers? Did you download direct from the manufacturer?

Notes: Make sure you downloaded the right driver for your device.  You may not be notified when the driver does not load upon reboot, you'll just be left with a generic driver - which seems like what has happened.
