Why do new mousepads stink so bad?

    the chemicals used in making them are outgassing.  this is normal and will cease within days

    That's the smell of cheap ink on polyester fabric glued together with recycled rubber. 

    BTW, from a personal study, I found that the best mousepad is a sheet of rough brown cardboard like the one that comes at the back of a wad of intermediate pad paper.
