  • What is the smallest weight that can be weighed using the following coins?

I have a number of coins with weights (in grams) as follows:

    One pence 3.56g

    Two pence 7.12g

    Five pence 3.25g

    Ten pence 6.50g

    Twenty pence 5.00g

    Fifty pence 8.00g

    One pound 9.50g

    Two pound 12.00g

What is the smallest weight I can weigh (in hundredths of a gram) using any number of coins and a balance? What combination of coins do I need to use and what is the smallest value needed?

It is assumed that the balance is sensitive enough to register at least the minimum weight required.

  • Converting text file to data table?

I have a text file in the format:

    [Field name 1]: [data]

    [Field name 2]: [data]

    ...

    [Field name 5]: [data]

    [Field name 1]: [data]

    ...

    &c

I would like to convert this to a Word Table or an Excel Spreadsheet (or an Access Table) ... or, indeed, the equivalent in Open Office.

I could write a VB script but it would take me about the same time to convert the data I have manually!

Is there already a small piece of freeware available which will do the job? (or can anyone suggest a quick way of doing it in Excel?)

  • Do you use online auction sites or 'storefront portal' sites to buy or sell online?

I am researching auction and 'storefront portal' sites which allow individuals to sell online. I know the bigger ones, of course, like eBay, half.com, Amazon and Craigslist but I would like to know of others that people may use.

It would be very useful to me if you could post the URL of the home page.

What are your experiences in general of any that you have used (as a seller or as a buyer)?

Do you find the website user-friendly? Do you find payment easy and secure? Were you happy with the transactions?

All comments gratefully received - but please don't reply if you have nothing useful to say!

What defines a 'Bourbon'? Is it only made from rye or corn or can it be made from other grains?

  • How do I set up a workgroup to share files and printer?

I have successfully set up an ICS sharing network with a Cable Modem, a Netsys WRT54GS, a desktop connected through ethernet to the router and a laptop connecting wirelessly. I have named both computers and run the Network Setup wizard on both, assigning an identical workgroup name. I have selected Share Files and Printers on both machines (and restarted) but when I go to My Network Places > View Workgroup Computers on each machine, I just see the local machine.

I thought that Workgroups was peer-to-peer and didn't need a server. Can you suggest what I may have missed?

  • What do you like or hate about Second Life?

(or should that be 'Get a Life'?) What I like most is being able to fly and being able to choose what I look like but I can also see the potential of marketing there to people who are in a dream mode. There are many people who take it very seriously and many, too, who visit it for kicks ... Have you been there? What is your take on it?

  • Have you been subject to card fraud?

Yesterday I checked one of my bank accounts and noticed that there had been a couple of cash withdrawals of 100 and 250 euros in Italy. I have not been to Italy, so I immediately phoned my bank. My card had been cloned! Thankfully, they were very efficient: they stopped the card, promised a new one in a few days and will also refund the stolen cash.

It was a very unsettling experience, nevertheless, and I was much relieved that it had, in the end, been resolved so efficiently. However, it left me with a number of unanswered questions ... (see Further Information, below)

  • Experience of Cystectomy or Neobladder?

At 66 I am faced with the prospect of losing my bladder due to cancer which has been treated for the last 12 years but has now progressed further.

There are two options, it appears: a neo-bladder formed from a section of the large intestine and a stoma (again using the large intestine) and external bag.

Do you have any experience of this, either yourself or with someone close to you, which you can share? I would be interested both in successes and cases where there have been complications. Much of the information I can find tends to emphasise the successes, yet my specialist has told me that I have a 1% chance of not surviving the operation and a 30% chance of there being some post-operative complications.

Any personal experience would be most helpful in deciding what my quality of life is likely to be.

  • Is 'Freedom of Speech' a right or a privilege?

Is it 'inalienable'? Should a person, who proclaims his opinion (often a misguided and very bigoted one) to the world and then will not listen to other people's views, have a right of recourse to the sanctuary of 'Freedom of Speech'?

  • What are the cryptic 'Partner Links' at the bottom right of my Yahoo account details?

    Partner Account Links:

    # ymsgr,konfab: Unlink

'ymsgr' is presumably Yahoo! Messenger and may have something to do with sharing my Contacts with Messenger, I suppose, but 'konfab' means nothing to me!

What does it do or not do if I click 'Unlink'?

(If you don't know, don't bother to answer ... do yourself a favour!)

  • What would be your 'favorite' Father Christmas?

It looks like I am going to get a job at a local garden centre as Father Christmas (OK ... Santa, to all you ex-pats who live in the States!). Now Father Christmas (or Santa) is a bit scarey but there is something between scarey and kind which all the best Santas are.

What ideas do you have? As a kid, what scared you and what would have made FC/Santa seem sort of OK? If you have been a Santa/FC, what advice would you have for a newbie?

  • What is this plant?

It is a bush and was seen in flower in a Devon (UK) garden in August. I believe that it may be one of the pea family but its unusual upturned brush of stamens is striking.

  • Will you celebrate with me?

I made it to Level 7 (it's not the points, honest guv!) so I am cyberbuying everyone a cyberdrink!

Please introduce yourself by saying where you come from (country, state), what is your favorite tipple - if you aren't thirsty, you can specify from the range of cyber-goodies on offer - and (most importantly!) what your best experience with Answers has been!

Just so you know, I'm from the UK, I'm having a pint of Greene King Abbot (a real ale, a little stronger than I usually drink) and my best experience with Answers has been when I asked a question (a serious one) and every one of the 20 or so answers was a considered, concerned and helpful response from a complete stranger! Quite a number of those people are now good (cyber)friends!

  • My Wireless network keeps losing its connection. Does anyone have any idea why?

The router is a Linksys WRT54GS (connected to my Cable modem). I have one wired connection to my desktop (which is not on at present) and a wireless connection to my laptop (with an internal Atheros card), which is sitting less than a foot from the Linksys box!

The signal strength is 'Excellent' (as you would expect) but the connection sometimes works for long periods and at other times keeps dropping, sometimes reconnecting immediately and other times needing 'Repair' to reconnect.

It obtains its IP address dynamically. Would I be better off assigning a fixed IP?

Is there anything I can do to understand WHY it is losing connection?

  • Do you think modern Churches can afford to tolerate people who take no part in Church life?

    See this article http://www.larknews.com/september_2006/secondary.p...

Do you think that asking people who do nothing but attend Sunday worship (if that) to leave the church is a good idea?
