  • Stubborn horse?

I have a four year old mare, I've always had her. She has been going well, walk trot and canter. No ground issues or anything. She is a very hot headed warmblood though, she is stubborn and does not like doing something she does not want to do. Lately she has been walking along fine, trotting fine, and when I have asked her to canter she started throwing small bucks as if pissed off. Now she is starting to suddenly stop at the trot and when I kick her forward she is rearing. It's not intended to get me off but she is clearly being stubborn and saying "I don't want to do that". Usually what I do is stand her, bend her neck back and forth until she gives me her mouth then trot again and keep doing this until she stops. I've owned a lot of horses so I have learned to just relax, pet her when she moves forward, try not to loose my cool and such but this one is stumping me. I've used a crop and very small spurs to get after her but this makes things worse and she reacts more violently to it (spinning and bucking). The most I seem to accomplish is to stay quiet until she negotiates to try again. I'm looking at finding a trainer to get on her and help me out, but in the meantime wondering what I could try? (She is not sore, and my saddle and bit are fine). Had a friend ride her with different gear and she was doing the same thing. (She also rears when worming). This has to be a combination of stubborn horse and clueless rider. Any ideas?

  • Restaurant refusing to serve us?

We live next to a small pub/restaurant. We worked late today, and got home around 7:30pm. We walked over to the restaurant at 8:30, I did not drink anything prior to going there, and my partner had one beer. We went into the lounge and the waitress said "you both look intoxicated. I cannot serve you". I don't even know how she could have made that judgment but clearly I was upset. She walked away, and after a few minutes of not hearing back from her we asked if could have a food menu. She have a dirty look and said "I cannot serve you. You need to leave". I asked to speak to manager who was in the restaurant area at the front desk. He basically had nothing to say and shrugged his shoulders. I am typing this now 100% sober, I don't understand how on earth they could accuse us of being drunk. Not to mention this is wrong? Is it not? To refuse us from even ordering a pizza. I am so upset with this place, and I wrote them a stern email. Is there anything I can do? Can I hold anything against them or should I just let it go? (May I add that we were celebrating a birthday) and ended up going home. I just hate places like this. Just because it is saturday night it does not mean we are shiitfaced young adults.

  • Swollen knee? what could this be?

I have a two year old filly, I went out to the barn a couple weeks ago and her knee was extremely large and swollen (no cuts or punctures). I thought perhaps she slipped on some ice, or maybe got kicked by another horse. I hosed it and put her back. Being a young horse, and with limited resources there is not a lot I can do with her. She is jumpy and not well behaved when I need her to stand still. It does not hurt her when I touch her knee, and she is 100% sound lunging in the arena. I waited a few days to see if if the swelling would go down and it still looked the same. It does not hurt her at all and it does not have much heat. It's now been two weeks and I have tried bute for a few days. I called the vet for an appointment because the leg looks bent of of shape and twice the size it should be. I am worried it might be OCD, which is common in a lot of young horses however my budget is tight and the only outcome I can think of is a 3000$ surgery.

I know OCD can be left uncured, but it's for sure something that I would not want to leave untreated. I was wondering if anyone has been through this with their horse? How much the expenses are? and what the chances are of OCD correcting itself without surgery?

Also if you have any other idea of what this might be? what I may have to expect? thanks

  • How do you deal with it? (boyfriend playing too much video games)?

I moved in with my boyfriend about a year ago. When we met it was instant connection, we have everything in common down to our hobbies, favorite foods, music, and work. We would be outside together every day doing something, and spend our weekends camping or hiking. Until a couple months ago we were pretty much inseparable. A few times a week I go out to meet a friend or ride my horse for the fact that I know it's not good to ALWAYS be together.

We both work in the trades and the winter was rough. I took up some part time, but he was unwilling to work unless it paid was he was making normally. For some stupid reason after paying his rent he still had hundreds of dollars to blow on alcohol and random spending, and pretty much took up drinking every night to cure his boredom. With his leftover money he ended up putting it towards a 2000$ computer even though we did not have money for groceries, and the cable bill was giving us final notices. At times when I was bring in even a little bit of money we would ask me to lend him my last 100$ (for something stupid like a mouse) and he would pay me back off his next unemployment. I always gave it to him because I love him, even though I would bite my tongue knowing it should be for food or gas.

Anyways, we are back working of course, but now that he has his nice computer he is on it 24/7. I understand that guys like to play their videogames, but he plays them from the time we get home to maybe 3 in the morning. I like to play my zelda and mario cart, ect.. but I play for a couple hours and move onto something else. Aside from the games he is on the weed every night, and drinking a case of beer every night. Last night he drank half a liter of whiskey, and a six pack casually while he played his games. This morning he said he was not in the mood to work, even though he has never done this. He use to drink a couple of beers on stressful days and we would both have a few drinks on friday night. Lately he told me he is more comfortable drinking on his own so he can get into his games and enjoy his online friends. On the weekends he gets shtfaced and goes off to the casino in the middle of the night. I get worried sick about him when he leaves the house really drunk and when I try to stop him he just pushes me away. He is hungover almost every morning and never wants to go out anymore. He never wants to visit with my family anymore, but gets furious if I tell him I don't want to go over to drink at his brothers house.

I love him to death and I cannot imagine even a day without him, but at the same time he is changing and half the time he is home is high or drunk. I have bad allergies to cigarette smoke and I have begged him to quit, for both his health and mine. He is great on the patches other than the second he touches alcohol he needs to smoke. When he is drinking I want to break up with him, I hate it when he is drunk early in the morning trying to wake me up.

I don't think I would ever leave him, but I want to know how to deal with this? I try to do my own thing, but this is still my home and I hate living with someone who is in an online world more than reality. I imagine a lot of girls deal with this? What do you do? What to do say to him? I have often asked him why he even needs me, and he just says "I love you, I want you, I can't live without you". But he does not show it, he loves his games and his internet more. His actions show it.

  • plug in cords for camping (blowing up matress)?

They have regular electrical outlets for basically everything, and then they have outlets in your car right? (for cellphones and stuff. I bought an electrical air pump for a camping mattress and I assumed it would be made for the car outlet, however it is for a regular outlet. I did not bother looking at the box closely because for some reason I did not think they would make one if it was for camping. Anyhow, can you buy extension cords to plug into the car that will convert a regular cord? For example can you use a truck outlet to somehow use a hairdryer or something? Do they even exist?

  • question about horse registration?

This is a really really dumb question and I am shocked I don't know this, but..... my horse is registered as a Canadian Trakehner. She is for sale and the buyer requested her papers and registry. You just pay the one time registry on a horse right? You don't have to update it every year? I have some old papers from when I bought the horse with her registry, pedigree, etc... and that's all the buyer will want, correct? (Plus a bill of sale, passport, etc..)

  • Can I use a photo of me owned by someone else?

Someone took a bunch of photos of me and my horse, they are quality photos and they are for sale. I was tagged in all of them. She is selling them digital or printed copies. Can I use it for my profile picture or would that be rude? They are not copyrighted or anything, and although I saved all of them I just feel rude using it when I have not paid for it.

  • My cat is not acting normal?

This morning I noticed my cat was ot acting herself. She was sitting in the bathroom which was unusual and when I pushed her to leave she was hesitant to move. She has not been eating, not taking treats. She just sits in one spot and kind of grumbles to herself. Normally she is outgoing, purring, and jumping up to see me. The stool looks normal, and the food is nothing different than what she has been eating. Do cats have an upset stomache sometimes? She had a lot of little treats yesterday. She is an indoor car, there is nothing that could make her sick. Will this pass or should I take her to the vet? I am only asking this because a vet trip could easily become $300.

  • Giving up the american life (time, money, and technology)?

For years I have been feeling lost in this world. I graduated high school with no career plan. I just started working and having fun with my hobbies. My role as a girl living in Canada is to find good work. Either by going to school or getting started in the trades. I just feel that the way of life here is disturbing, lost and wasteful. People cannot live here without money, we cannot get money without working, and we work on a set schedule and set time. I have been so stressed about money and paying bills. I feel like people are toxic. Always drunk, smoking and swearing. People sit on their couches and watch TV, we have our faces glued to the computer screen and we are glancing at our cell phones every few minutes. It's all about possessions, buying new technology, buying new clothes, buying a car to get to work, getting married and buying a house. It's a cycle, and I hate it.

My family has never been spiritual or religious. My step mom came into my life about 10-15 years ago, and I know she practices some kind of religion which is crossed with hinduism, and something else. She has always taught me about karma, the energy of thought, and how to act towards others. I am not christian and I don't believe in worshiping a particular god. When I was a little girl I felt that all life is sacred and valued. I stopped eating meat, I stopped smacking mosquitoes, I don't know how I found myself so young but I carried those beliefs into adulthood. Everyone in my family is your normal american/canadian. They are working, have houses, children, hobbies.... I just feel this is not me. This is not the life for me. I want to live a life where there is no money, no possesions, no cell phones everywhere you look. I feel like an outcast, I feel alientated. I feel like I am in the wrong time period. I feel like I am going crazy.

I just need to ask, is there a life that would be more suitable for what I am looking for? I feel like my life is killing me, like it is ripping out my soul. I always thought of learning more about religion and dedicating my life to become a monk. I want to live some place where people are in tune with the earth. There are so many cultures out there. Are there any good stories people have written about their journeys? Are there any religions I could look into? I saw a documentary about girls becoming nuns, and the life actually called out to me, however I am not christian and I cannot dedicate my life to something I don't beleive in. Has anyone ever put any thought into this? Know anyone who has?

I am not trying to rush into anything. I just want some ideas.

  • Would you give it up? (People obsessed with showing)?

If you worked 60-80 hour weeks, sometimes several weeks in a row without a day off... just so you could have a horse and compete/show, would you give it up and work less?

Showing is seriously my life. My dream is to make it into a grand prix ring with my own horse. I work A LOT, and the money is just not there to keep supporting the shows. I cannot imagine life without showing and lessons. I use to board in a pasture and hack around the property. I felt like I was just sitting around doing nothing, working towards nothing.

I am starting to feel overwhelmed and burnt out. I can physically get all the work done but I feel like I am being worked to death. I go to the shows and feel it is worth every minute. Other days I feel sick, and have often vomited from the stress. I am working towards a new job which will involve some school. One day I will have a journeyman and I can do some of the shows. Right now I feel the best decision is to give up the showing, possibly move my horse outside, and chill for a few years. I want to cry just thinking about it. There are so many girls at the barn with beautiful horses, they go to all the shows, live normal lives, and every day I see pictures on facebook of their nice vacations in Hawaii, Mexico, Cuba, etc. I've never been on a nice vacation, I have never been on a shopping spree, or bought a nice car. I live in a terrible apartment, and I put all my money towards my lessons, and showing. It's my passion, my life, my everything.

I guess what I am asking..

Would you give up your passion for a few years to work good hours, and get on track towards a better career? Even if it made you go crazy? Lose your mind? Make you cry when you watched all your friends at the shows?

Or would you work a lot and continue doing the thing you loved most, even though it was burning you out and putting you in a spot in life where you were heading no where?

I feel like I would lose my mind by moving away from the barn, stop the showing and lessons, where I feel like I need to take this step in life to start living more healthy.

  • clogged shower drain?

I asked this question before but the advice did not help me much.

I live in an apartment and my shower drain has been clogged for a long time. The water would slowly fill the tub and now it's at the point where the water will not go back down at all. The drain is very small and I cannot find a pipe that goes down. I used a snake but it just went up to that water catcher (those things that stop your tub from overflowing. I have no idea why they made it like this but it's impossible to find the lower pipe where the water goes. A lot of people told me to use baking soda and vinegar and after a box of baking soda and four liters of vinegar it was a fail. It just foamed like crazy and went up the pipe. I unscrewed the catcher to see if there was hair, and there was nothing. The drain looks like this one.

Any other ideas? Are there any good products I can try? snakes will not work. If I cannot fix it in the next day I am phoning the company to come and fix it. I just hate that idea though because it will take them several months to come (I picked a really bad renting company).

  • my cat is too staticy!!?

I have a small, long haired cat and I am feeling like her hair is getting out of control. She is full of static and every time I touch her I get shocked. Her hair is sticking up all the time, and recently she has been shedding a lot. I work in a kennel in the grooming area. The groomer gave me some anti-static spray which helps a lot when I comb it into the hair. It's only a few hours until her hair goes all crazy again. We gave her a bath a couple months ago, and although she loves them, I cannot bring a cat to work with me every week. She is eating good food. I try to keep her on the evo, although I have been using up the last of other random cat foods. Could the changes in food be making her full of static? Any other products I could try? My poor cat just looks terrible walking around the house with her crazy hair, and I bet it feels uncomfortable.

  • Clogged drains? can't fix them?

This is an odd question but how the heck do you unclog a drain? I live in an apartment and the drains are small. My shower drain is already so bad that the tub is half full of water when I am done showering. My kitchen sink is starting to get bad too although I never dump anything down it. I tried taking a hanger to get the hair out but it's not working. I feel like it's embarrassing and a huge hassle trying to call the rental company. Not to mention it took them a month to fix my broken heat in the middle of the winter. Would it work if I bought a bottle of clr or something?

  • Gaining weight!??? what is going on?

Okay, I want to loose about 10 pounds so I completely cut carbs out of my diet. I've stopped eating bread, rice, pasta, i've even cut back on granola. I have a slight sugar addiction and tried sucking on hard candies instead of actually eating junky foods. I normally have a very active day. At work I am walking at least 10 hours a day, sometimes running, lifting, etc... On my days off I am getting a lot of exercise too. I changed my eating habits about a week ago, and when I stepped on the scale I GAINED 6 pounds. Now I have fcking 16 pounds I want to loose. I have been eating nothing but fruit and eggs all damn week and I GAIN weight. I thought, oh it might just be muscle but I look in the mirror and look fatter than ever. What the heck is going on?!? any ideas?? I am about ready to live off celery.

  • I always throw up after eating asian noodles?

I'm not sure what you would call these. Every time I go into a Vietnamese, chinese, or any restaurant really I get really sick after eating these types of noodles. I am fine with pasta and regular soup but I am constantly throwing up after these noodles.

I have a peanut allergy, and I thought maybe they were cooked in peanut oil. It seems odd that every restaurant would do that though. Any ideas? does anyone else get this?

  • rearing foals, how can I fix this?

Lately I have been having some trouble with my filly. She is 8 months old and becoming very stubborn about coming into the barn. I have no trouble catching and haltering her. I can tie her with no problem and work around her, picking up the feet, grooming, blanketing, etc.... One bad habit she has picked up since a few months old is rearing. When I ask her to walk forward she gets very stubborn, plants her feet on the ground and then takes a big rear back. She does not think one little bit when she rears and often falls onto her back even though I let her go the second she pulls away. Today she fell back and crashed through the barn doors which is just ridiculous. She has a close friend and I cannot get my filly into the barn unless I bring her buddy in first. She will not set one foot in the barn unless it's her own idea. Treats and grain are out because she is not interested yet.

I had an experienced horseman out working with her, and he trailered her from the last barn to her current one. He is amazing but he was also my trainers husband. They had some issues and he moved away. I don't have the money right now to hire a Professional so I need some ideas.

I can work outside with her just fine. She will walk circles around me (lunge), move off my pressure, move her haunches over. Honestly, I have no problems until I ask her to come into the barn. She gets furious and I am having a hard time being patient with her. I have tried waiting, walking step by step and she will not come in. I have tried pulling her, while getting a friend to tap her with a broom. Again, she gets furious and rears over. I had been using a leather halter and switched to a rope halter, and still nothing. Once she is inside she will do the same thing going back out. She will refuse to go outside unless her buddy goes out first.

The rearing use to be very bad, and she would try to strike me when I picked out her feet. We worked through that problem and it is no longer an issue. I need to stop this rearing before she gets bigger. She is already the size of a pony, and very likely growing up to 17 hands.

No ignorant answers please. I would also prefer an answer from foal owners, experienced trainers. Thank you.

  • Can I demand a discount on rent?

I am renting a one bedroom apartment. I have a yearly agreement and I have been there over two months now. My rent includes heat and water, I pay the rest. My thermostat broke about a month ago. I did not make a big deal about it until winter came a couple weeks ago. The temperature in my apartment has been dropping to 10 degrees (50 degrees Farenheit). Although it does not sound bad, it is very cold. I am shivering my butt off, and even the dog is shaking. The colder it is outside, the colder in my apartment.

I rent from a huge rental company, and I phoned my manager two weeks ago (last friday). The guy who answered said I had the wrong number and I checked it twice. I phoned the main office and they told me they would send someone to come fix the problem. I waited all week and by the next monday no one had come. I phoned the office again and they gave me my new managers phone number to call. I called him, and he said there was nothing he could do, and to call back to the main office. I phoned back and they transferred me to maintenance (why not the first time, I don't know). They said someone would once again come to fix the problem. I told them no one showed up the first time and they apologized and promised someone would come this week. We are now heading into wednesday and they have not come. I am waiting until the end of the week, and if they do not come I am going to flip. Can I legally refuse to pay my rent? Or at least get a discount? This is not fair. I am paying my full rent and it is suppose to include heat.
