  • can distance change the sound of a telephone ringtone (telepathy experiment)?

I'm trying to debunk a telepathy experiment - this one: http://youtu.be/JnA8GUtXpXY?t=32m33s

I'd love to believe it was true so I I sincerely hope I fail miserably, but I suspect the experiment is flawed or has not been properly conducted. The four callers are randomized and the calls received on phones without caller ID; I'll assume for now that they have been properly randomized but then I have to wonder if there might be some other property of the telephones that could give a clue as to the name of the caller; could distance or location alter the sound of the phone's ringing? Even a fraction of a second delay between the first and second ring might be a clue, and I've noticed on my own phone that occasionally there is sometimes an almost inaudible "blip" before the phone starts ringing.

  • Correct interpretation of the 2nd Amendment "Right to keep and bear arms"?

"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"

Does it mean that the people needed guns to become militias or does it mean they needed guns to protect them from militias?

  • How does Twitter know where I live?

This is a little creepy. Twitter suggested the name of a person I know who lives a long, lony way away from me as someone to follow. I don't follow anyone on Twitter or even use it much; so far I have posted 7 comments and that's it. When I set up my Twitter account I used a false name, false postcode (zipcode) and never reveal any information about myself.

So how in the name of f*** does Twitter already know I know this person? Where are they getting this information?

  • Alternative to "Kindle For PC" to read e-books?

I want to download a couple of e-books to read on my computer but Kindle For PC infects computers with "Conduit" spamware/malware, which I could remove in about half an hour but it's the principle of the thing. I refuse to use such a piece of crap.

What's my best option if there is one?

  • Are police officers in the UK allowed to lie when they stop people?

In the USA the police are legally allowed to lie and deceive anyone they detain, but I'm wondering what the situation is here in the UK. I don't really know what they are allowed to get away with. As far as I know they cannot tell outright lies during an "interview" because it would likely damage the prosecution, but what about during routine stops?

There's an interesting example here where the police officer tells the guy in the car that he HAS to get out of the car but the guy in the car responds that he is NOT legally obliged to do so:

  • powerpoint won't allow me to add more pictures to the clipboard?

I have PowerPoint 2010 and I'm making a slideshow that currently contains 75 pictures with various animated text effects. I have cleared the clipboard but if I try to copy any item PowerPoint displays the message "Item not collected. Format not supported by Office Clipboard. This occurs even with items I have already previously added to the clipboard.

The only way I can add more items is to drag & drop directly to the main window or click Photo Album > Edit Photo Album > insert picture from file/disk > Update. But this causes the images to go out of sequence and puts all the text boxes onto blank pages.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? At the moment the only way I can see of working around the problem is to start from scratch and add ALL the pictures I need before I start.

  • Can I create a simple "hidden object" game using PowerPoint?

I've been playing around with Powerpoint and there are some pretty cool features hidden in there, one of which is a "trigger" option which allows you to run animated text after a button is pressed. I can make the trigger buttons transparent but I can't figure out how to allow a slideshow to continue on to the next picture after the trigger button has been pressed - unless I tick the "advance slide on mouse click" option in Transitions, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

  • Is there somting like an offline version of Slideshare?

    http://www.slideshare.net/

What I really want is some kind of slideshow maker that automatically pauses, I'd also like to be able to remove forward and rewind buttons. I've been tinkering around with Camtasia but bizarrely it is incapable of disabling the functions of it's own player or allowing "hotspots" (clicky links like you see on YouTube) to work offline; the only way they will work is if you host the project online, and even then there are no guarantees it won't fail with browsers like Chrome. I'm glad I didn't buy it, Camtasia is very expensive.

I remember software like this from 15 years ago so why is it so difficult now?

  • Do you find modern superhero comic books depressing?

I do. To give you an example, the story of the character "X-23" from X-Men starts with a woman being forcibly impregnated, forced to give birth and then her daughter is subjected to abuse, neglect and torture from infancy to turn her into a perfect killing machine.

I haven't bought a comic book for more than 20 years because comics that were once old favorites of mine have become so bleak. What HAS happened to the World of comic books?

  • Will a portable power station power a small vacuum cleaner?

I've read that some portable power stations go *bang* if you use them to charge up a laptop, so I'm not at all sure what I need to power a vacuum cleaner.

This one has a "140w power inverter" so what happens if I plug in a vacuum cleaner? Even the lowest power vacuum cleaners are around 1000w. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7...

  • Should vegetables come with a safety warning?

User-friendly vegetables like carrots and parsnips which are easy to chop up are no problem, but I'm talking about the killer veggies like swedes.

How many people a year injure themselves trying to peel and chop up swedes? Casualty departments must see dozens of people come in every day with vegetable-related injuries. You might think I'm exaggerating if you're one of those people who only buys pre-packed pre-chopped vegetables instead of real ones, but swedes are dangerous if you use the wrong knife or try to cut them when they are still too green.

  • How to calculate the cost of importing an item from the USA?

I'm getting dizzy just trying to figure out how many different costs are involved let alone the actual amount of money that will be charged. I need help!

There's VAT and import duty and customs handling charges, and just the import duty alone seems to be cripplingly expensive.

The item has a value of around £900 plus £150 for shipping; I don't know how to classify it because it doesn't match any of the available categories; I'd describe it as an air-powered motor or pump.

  • WTF?! What has happened to Yahoo Answers?

Is it broken or something? The familiar green page has been replaced with white and some of the basic features are hard to find - if they are even still there. Where is "My Saved Searches"?

    I hope this isn't a permanent thing.

  • What is the truth about prostate cancer? Is radical surgery really always necessary?

If there is one form of cancer that scares me it's this one, not because of the risk of dying from it, but because it's common, and despite the "oh it's nothing to be concerned about" attitude of GP's and doctors, if you have your prostate removed it WILL ruin your sex life. Most men are terrified of having their nuts cut off, but the real source of sexual pleasure for men comes from the prostate not the scrotum. Why are doctors so dishonest about this simple fact?

One of the ways cancer charities distort the truth about cancer figures is to include prostate cancer; the "one in three of us" campaign never mentioned that virtually all men over the age of 75 have prostate cancer but will die of old age before they even notice any effects from the cancer, instead they added prostate cancer to bulk up the numbers.

I remember once in a TV documentary it was mentioned that it's quite possible for a man to get prostate cancer at the age of 50 and live to the age of a 100 and never know he had cancer. Anyone know anything more about that? After the scandal of decades of unnecessary complete mastectomies on women I can well believe that doctors are being scalpel-happy and not telling their patients the whole truth of giving them options.

  • Person Of Interest. Good series, but why is every villain in the show super-rich?

A billionaire or super-spy. It's starting to get on my nerves, you can almost guess who the villain is simply by the fact that he'll be the guy with the most money. They seem to live in a World inhabited exclusively by multimillionaires and police detectives. I fear that in Season 3 POI may have jumped the proverbial shark.

  • Is it fair or reasonable that new cars are taxed at just £30 a year?

    Some are even tax free!

    http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/road-tax-rates-201...

I mean seriously, do people who can afford to buy a new car really need a tax discount? And who is paying for the shortfall? There are all these new cars coming on to the roads while old cars are being crushed because they "cause pollution" (of course there is no pollution at all involved in making a new car) but the Government is still going to want the same revenue.

  • Noise from rear wheel after changing brake discs and pads?

I thought I'd cracked the mystery when I realized I'd put the wheel nuts back on back-to-front (my first time replacing brake pads on a car) but the noise is still there and worse than it was before.

It's a low-pitched kind of grinding noise that only happens when I make a right turn. It's hard to tell for certain but it seems to be coming from the nearside (left-hand side) rear wheel. The brakes work fine and there's not really any obvious visible signs of anything wrong.

I should note that I didn't put anti-rattle shims in (the old ones were unusable and there weren't any included with the new pads) but the grinding noise sounds too loud to be a simple rattle, and it only happens on right turns. The harder the turn the more pronounced the grinding noise.

Can anyone tell me what the fault is? Tomorrow I'll try putting on a spare wheel to see if that makes the noise go away, then I'll be able to tell if the fault is in the wheel or if it's something else.

  • Marcel & Louis Theroux, is there a rift between the Theroux brothers?

Louis Theroux is pretty well known on UK television but his brother Marcel is equally talented although he acts a lot different to his brother. I've never seen them together on TV or even seen a photo of them together which is strange considering they are both in the same line of work and have both done shows for the same TV channels.
